The Little Clod of Earth (after Dürer)
Botany
The paper sculpture ‘The Little Clod of Earth (after Dürer) is based on the drawing by Dürer Das große Rasenstück (1503) of a clump of unremarkable plants from the corner of a field. Where Dürer’s intention was to highlight Divine creation, the beauty found in every detail of nature, my intention was to highlight our increasingly consumerist culture. The image shifts between the beauty of the plant from (which I have recreated from pressed plant models) to the bright complementary colours, anthropomorphic cartoon characters and branded materials used to construct them.
